TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:45 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $61,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Lady Digby – She gets class relief off a pair of stakes including the Calder Oaks; filly still has a big upside.
Mezuzah – Logical chalk due to the Frankel-Bejarano combination; was flattered when Placid Lake won next time out.
Long Shot – She’s an Eleven
Race 2 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds
Rummysecret War – Taking a solid drop in class for a low percentage barn; Baltas adds blinkers on, should show some speed.
He’s Fargone – FTS from the Mullins barn has been working well for career debut; need not be much in an underwhelming field.
Long Shot – Uxmal
Race 3 – 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 8 feet), $150,000 San Gorgonio Handicap, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Wait a While – Appears to be shooting fish in a barrel dropping from grade 1 stakes for this; saves ground for Gomez.
Costume – Bejarano will let her settle and pick up what he can in the stretch run; will need the chalk to have a bad day.
Long Shot – Sohgol
Race 4 – 1 mile, Purse $30,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds
Manningtoharrison – Outran his high odds with a good performance in the Eddie Logan; will welcome the class relief today.
Big Dude – Making a big class rise from maiden claiming win to facing winners; like that Gomez takes over for Mitchell.
Long Shot – Good Man Dan
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $18,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
Denied – Mullins has the key for how to make this old guy run; slight edge in a tough heat for a low level claimer.
Spriggzee – Mullins has an uncoupled entry, so that automatically makes this longer price a contender; Nakatani will help.
Long Shot – Imitation
Race 6 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
June My Love – Her race two back is fast enough to win; tepid chalk in another wide open affair, expect a blanket finish.
Belleacton – Gomez remains loyal despite a miserable performance last time out; beaten chalk can rebound for Drysdale.
Long Shot – Feel Free to Flee
Race 7 – 7 furlongs, Purse $57,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
Perfect Casting – Ran very well in SoCal debut in a turf route; like the turn back in distance, Gomez and elongated sprint.
Temecula Creek – Frankel charge began his career in SoCal before summering in New York; tactical speed to sit a nice trip.
Long Shot – Song of Pirates
Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, $75,000 Paseana Handicap, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Grain of Truth – No shame losing the Bayakoa to Romance Is Diane and Tough Tiz’s Sis; is improving with every start.
Monashee – Tepid chalk in another difficult race; she had won at least 11 races in a row in Canada as far as I can see.
Long Shot – Fonce De
Race 9 – 7 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds
Sportsbookjunkee – Logical chalk off a good pair of seconds facing similar company; like the turn back in distance too.
Pivot Pad – Making the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; exits a good MSW race to Gayego and Hoods Up.
Long Shot – Mosel
Best Bet – Wait a While (race 3)
Santa Anita Sunday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 22/3/$18.40; Long Shots, 11/3/$49.80; Best Bet, 1/1/$2.20
Santa Anita Totals – 204/48/$368.20; Long Shots, 103/18/$211.20; Best Bets, 12/4/$20.20
