Current lighting focus of design seminar

Today’s lighting technology and trends will be the focus of November’s First Friday event at the Las Vegas Design Center.

Eleanor McKay, chief executive officer of Niermann Weeks, will present “Lighting Today: Lighting in the Post-Incandescent World” at 10 a.m. Friday in the third-floor seminar room in Building C at the Las Vegas Design Center, 475 S. Grand Central Parkway.

McKay will discuss how U.S. energy laws have changed and what is being done to replace the incandescent bulb, which will be phased out by 2012. She will bring lighting samples and discuss various types of lighting, such as LED, compact fluorescents and halogens.

According to McKay, replacements for incandescent bulbs on the market do not quite work, many cannot be dimmed and are extraordinarily expensive.

“We need a really good alternative,” McKay said. “Designers need to lobby intensively with their lighting suppliers.”

Her presentation also will help designers gain insights on how to stay relevant, pay attention to details, tune in to clients needs and protect their designs.

Created especially for interior designers and industry professionals, the day’s festivities will include hospitality and showroom specials.

Reservations are requested and can be made by e-mailing LVDC@LVDesignCenter.com or calling 599-3093.

Gaining control over this annual weed is not easy to do

To make sure it doesn’t return you have to interrupt the seed-to-flowering-plant cycle at least for a couple of years and fill the voids with something competitive.

Why did my bird of paradise plants quit blooming?

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
