Lladró celebrates family with new pieces

Angeles Lladró, daughter of Juan Lladró, the eldest of the three founding Lladró brothers, will visit Las Vegas to present new introductions by the porcelain artist and sign purchases.

She will visit Lladro Boutique Las Vegas in the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian from 6-8 p.m. Friday.

During this special tour, Angeles Lladró will celebrate family by unveiling creations that pay tribute to the essence of life. Angeles Lladró, a mother of two, has always understood the importance of the strong bond of family as it is a core theme to her own life and is an inspiration for Lladró creations since the beginnings of the company, more than 50 years ago.

According to the Spanish porcelain firm, the new pieces — The Father, The Mother, The Daughter and The Son — offer a modern and sophisticated interpretation of a traditional theme. The white matte finish and soft colors of the sculptures reveal the beauty of their anatomies and stress the purity of the lines, symbolizing the nature of the feelings for each other.

Also to be showcased are A tender caress, a sculpture that recreates a moment of peaceful rest between a mother and her baby; and two special Mother’s Day gift sets: My little sweetie and Beginnings, which depict a mother and child and include a complimentary candle vase from the Lladró Fragrances Collection.

Reservations are requested and can be made by calling 866-724-8705.

Mystery novelist to speak at design center

Was it Colonel Mustard in the freshly painted library with a putty knife? Or perhaps Miss Scarlet in the porte cochere with the tape measure? Anything can happen when the world of design meets law then collides with a whodunit. The unique combination will be investigated thoroughly when author Franklin Levy speaks about his new book, “Die Decorator Die” at Las Vegas Design Center’s First Friday event Friday.

“I look forward to talking about the literary meeting of the worlds of law, design, humor and intrigue and how my experiences with the design community led to ‘fiction,’ ” Levy said.

In addition to being an author, Levy is counsel to Las Vegas Sands Corp. He also has been studying design by proxy for 30 years, thanks to his wife, Lynda, who is an interior designer. “Die Decorator Die” combines his knowledge of law and design and applies it to a murder mystery set in a Boston decorator showcase house.

The day’s festivities also includes showroom specials, hospitality and other exclusive offerings for the trade.

Reservations are requested and can be made by e-mailing LVDC@LVDesignCenter.com or calling 599-3093.

Gaining control over this annual weed is not easy to do

To make sure it doesn’t return you have to interrupt the seed-to-flowering-plant cycle at least for a couple of years and fill the voids with something competitive.

Why did my bird of paradise plants quit blooming?

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
