Luxurious lullaby

When it came time for Stearns & Foster to introduce its new line of luxury mattresses, no detail was too small to be overlooked.

From the two-toned microsuede trim in chocolate and mocha hues to the silk- or cashmere-infused knit cover to the raspberry peek-a-boo fabric on the foundation, nothing was overlooked in creating the luxury mattresses.

“There is inspiration in every detail,” said Mark Delahanty, vice president of Sealy brands, the parent company of Stearns & Foster.

The line debuted earlier this year during the home-furnishings trade show at World Market Center Las Vegas and is expected to be available on retail floors by the end of this month. It includes the traditional Stearns & Fosters models, which range in price from $1,199 to $1,699 for a queen-sized set, and the Estate models, which range in price from $1,499 to $2,499.

“Stearns & Foster continues to expand its line of sophisticated offerings and provide consumers with practical luxury and refined style,” said Larry Rogers, Sealy president and chief executive officer.

The new line was co-developed with IDEO, an international design consultant that was involved in creating the iPod. Delahanty said their aim was to create a look that resonated with the luxury consumer.

The peek-a-boo raspberry fabric on the box spring, for example, was inspired by a woman’s purse. “It’s that unexpected surprise, like the fabric you find inside a woman’s purse,” he said. “The longer you spend with it, the more you will notice.”

Additionally, the company’s script logo is embroidered on the tufted mattress cover, a homage to the company’s 1846 origins as a manufacturer of luxury seats for horse-drawn carriages.

But looks are only a portion of the picture. According to Delahanty, the company also debuted a new innerspring technology that is soft and cradling, yet recognizes the importance of support. The proprietary IntelliCoil technique uses a single-piece, two-stage tempered, wrapped spring within a spring.

“We have visually tempting beds that feel as good as they look,” he said.

The mattresses’ outer coil provides support that cradles the body while the inner coil provides deep support necessary for proper body alignment.

Also, the entire line contains a proprietary Variable Response Technology foam that offers a softer sleep surface, Delahanty said. The technology is zoned to provide maximum comfort and support where it is needed the most: the shoulders, hips and knees.

The box spring foundation also has reinforced corners and modules that help reduce motion and absorb shock from weight.

Gaining control over this annual weed is not easy to do

To make sure it doesn’t return you have to interrupt the seed-to-flowering-plant cycle at least for a couple of years and fill the voids with something competitive.

Why did my bird of paradise plants quit blooming?

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
