Asian Images to mark grand reopening

Asian Images will celebrate its grand reopening and debut its new showroom May 9. Scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. at the new location, 5805 W. Spring Mountain Road, No. 111, the store will highlight its unique offering of Asian artifacts and home furnishings.

Owner Tommy Anantasilp has established relationships with artisans and markets throughout Thailand, Myanmar, Bali, Laos, Cambodia, Tibet, Mongolia and China. Since 2000, buyers for Asian Images have scoured that part of the world looking for statuary, stone carvings, tapestries, fountains, garden lighting, furniture and other home furnishings. The store’s offerings include traditional designs, antiques and tropical design elements, which all blend well with contemporary settings.

“For me the exciting part of the process is when we open these massive containers that we have filled from purchases made throughout Asia,” Anantasilp said. “There isn’t some designer storefront in Asia that we purchase these items from out of a catalog. Our purchases take place over tours covering hundreds of miles.”

For the past nine years, the store was located in Henderson.

Workshops part of HD expo at Sands center

A variety of workshops and educational sessions will be part of the annual HD expo, scheduled to get under way May 13 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center.

A session about bathroom and spa designs will be presented from 9:30-11:30 a.m. May 15. Anthony DiGuiseppe, founder and principal of DiGuiseppe Architects, and Peter Schor, founder of Dynamic Results, will lead the session. More than 200 images of great bathrooms from architecture and design firms around the world will be shown.

Specifics regarding space planning, products, materials, technology, water savings, maintenance and operational concerns, and leading-edge trends will be discussed.

Also on tap is a session about universal design. Rosemarie Rossetti, an internationally known speaker and advocate for people with disabilities, will discuss ways to incorporate universal design elements in new construction and remodeling projects.

Universal design is human-centered design, accommodating people of all sizes, ages and abilities. It provides a framework for the design of spaces and products benefiting the widest possible range of people and situations without special or separate design.

Rossetti knows from personal experience the difficulties people face when circumstances change due to injury or aging. “Ten years ago, a spinal cord injury left me paralyzed from the waist down. I came home from the hospital in a wheelchair and realized just how unaccommodating my two-story home was to me. My life change was sudden; for others life changes more gradually such as with aging or degenerative illness,” she said.

The session is scheduled for 1 p.m. May 15.

Gaining control over this annual weed is not easy to do

To make sure it doesn’t return you have to interrupt the seed-to-flowering-plant cycle at least for a couple of years and fill the voids with something competitive.

Why did my bird of paradise plants quit blooming?

They were in bloom when we planted them five or six years ago, and they bloomed the following year as well. But they have not bloomed again.
