Sourdough search ends happily

At its worst, it’s insipid. But at its best, sourdough bread has a nice crisp crust and elastic, slightly sour interior, and it’s the latter kind that fellow readers have found locally for Chris Cooke.

Noting that there’s nothing like the real thing from San Francisco, Penny Lumb nonetheless recommended the Authentic Sliced Sourdough Bread, locally baked by Sanborn Bakery, that she gets at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 5198 Boulder Highway; San Francisco expatriate Dan Stegemann also endorsed it, adding that he gets his at Albertsons. Robert Lepore suggested Whole Foods Market, Fred Jones recommended that made in-house at most Vons stores and Marie Villareale recommended Great Buns Bakery at 3270 E. Tropicana Ave., where she said it’s available in 1- and 2-pound and miniround loaves and as dinner rolls. …

For Carol Barash, Judith Draper e-mailed that she gets 7½-ounce cans of Deming’s Red Sockeye Wild Alaska Salmon at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 2310 E. Serene Ave., and Sheila Morse and Claudia Wright said cans of wild-caught red salmon are available at Trader Joe’s. Wright noted that it’s not labeled “sockeye,” but Morse said it’s “particularly tasty.” …

For Gary Patton, Belinda King e-mailed that Levi’s Deli at 7875 W. Sahara Ave. has pickled tongue from New York. …

For Ginger McCallum, who’s looking for a local source for six-packs of 8-ounce bottles of Pellegrino Sparkling Mineral Water, Marvia Perry spotted them at Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market at 9475 W. Desert Inn Road. …

More on osso buco: Mike Denley suggested Pasta Mia West at 4455 W. Flamingo Road, Debbie Caponera suggested Gaetano’s Ristorante at 10271 S. Eastern Ave. in Henderson, Aaron Mantz suggested the Italian station of the dinner buffet at The Orleans at 4500 W. Tropicana Ave., Connie Stilley recommended it as a special at Katherine’s Restaurant at the Casablanca in Mesquite and Casey Levine, an employee of the Sicilian Caffe, 3520 E. Tropicana Ave., recommended theirs. …

More reader requests:

Wright: a restaurant that serves open-faced sandwiches of real roast turkey, which she used to get at the cafe at the Fiesta Henderson;

Carl Taylor: Colman’s dry mustard in 16-ounce containers, which he used to get at Smart & Final;

Marv Dalby: Geisha albacore tuna;

Cheryl Rosenfeld: Entenmann’s corn muffins;

Toney Hudson: corn nuggets — a brand other than Green Giant — and breaded veggie sticks;

And Gary S. Gubitz: a Chinese restaurant or carryout, preferably in the northwest part of the valley, that serves pressed duck in square shapes with a crispy batter-type crust.
