Students mean business
at state leadership conference

Future Business Leaders of America students at the Southeast Career and Technical Academy, 5710 Mountain Vista St., received 12 first-place plaques, 11 second and seven third at the FBLA State Leadership Conference last month in Reno. They also were named a Gold Seal Chapter for having the largest social membership and second-largest state membership and won the Sweepstakes Award for the fourth consecutive year for earning the most team points.

Students learn of John Adams’ legacy

Students from Canyon Springs and Eldorado high schools visited the Regional Justice Center, 200 Lewis Ave., to learn about the justice system May 5 and 6 as part of Nevada Law Day. This year’s theme was The Legacy of John Adams — From Boston to Guantanamo.

Students discussed legal principles such as due process of law and its impact on the criminal justice system . Students in classrooms across the state were able to watch the event through video conferencing.

Judges, attorneys and law enforcement representatives also visited elementary and secondary schools to talk about their professions and the careers available in the justice system. For more information, visit lawday.nevadajudiciary.us.

veterans to discuss trauma of war

The second annual UNLV Combat Trauma Conference is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 25 and 8 a.m. to noon May 26 at the Richard Tam Alumni Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway .

Female veterans will discuss the emotional trauma of combat during the conference for medical professionals, counselors, legislators and veterans groups. The conference is designed to help professionals understand the problems and develop solutions for issues facing female veterans such as post traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, military sexual trauma, homelessness, physical health and family trouble.

Speakers scheduled to appear include retired Brig. Gen. Rebecca Halstead, retired Col. Kim Olson, author of “Iraq and Back “; Elizabeth Gifford of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and U.S. representatives from across the country.

Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School
to host cheer camp

Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School plans to host a cheer camp from 9 a.m. to noon June 13-16 at the school’s gym, 2015 S. Hualapai Way.

The camp is $85 for girls entering second through sixth grades. Girls will be taught in their own age groups.

The camp will be taught by varsity cheerleaders and chaperoned by cheer coaches. Water and a snack will be provid ed, and T-shirts will be give on the last day of camp.

See vintage photography exhibit
at Nevada State College

Nevada State College, 303 S. Water St., plans to host a photography exhibit of 99 images of Las Vegas, shot with iPhones and the Hipstamatic app, through May 31 in the library.

The Hipstamatic app mimics the 1980s Hipstamatic camera that had a tiny viewfinder and random light leaks to provide discolored, vintage-looking photos.

Nevada State College assistant professor Gregory Robinson coordinated the exhibit, using images from more than 40 photographers. Funding for the exhibit was provided by the Nevada Arts Council.

INSTITUTE TO GIVE GRANTS TO PROSPECTIVE MEDICAL ASSISTANTS

The Medical Skills for Life Institute is offering 10 $2,000 scholarships and 10 $500 tuition grants to the first 20 students who are enrolled and accepted to the institute through Sept 1. These scholarships are for people looking to become medical assistants or phlebotomists.

Kindergarten through fifth-grade students can win $529 for college

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade can enter the Nevada $529 College Savings Day Contest for a chance to win $529 to be used to open a college savings account or enhance an existing account.

The theme of the contest is “I want to go to college so I can become a … ” Students must complete the sentence and submit a drawing or an essay of 50 words or less about their career ambition. Entries must be received by the state treasurer’s office by Friday .

Public Education Foundation plans charity golf tournament

The Public Education Foundation’s 11th annual Tee Up for Kids Charity Golf Tournament is scheduled for
7:30 a.m. June 2 at Spanish Trail Country Club, 5050 Spanish Trail Lane.

Playing spots are available for $300 and foursomes for $1,200, with proceeds going to Nevada public schools through the foundation’s various programs.

Tournament activities will include hole-in-one and closest-to-the-pin contests, tee prizes, trophies and an awards luncheon.

Nevada Homeschool Expo
coming in June

The third annual Nevada Homeschool Expo is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 11 at Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 Lindell Road.

The expo will include information on curriculum, workshops, guest speakers, exhibits and live demonstrations.

Teachers can seek funding
online for class projects

Local school teachers can apply for donations for classroom projects through donorschoose.org.

The nonprofit website, founded in 2000, allows public school teachers to describe specific educational projects for students, and donors choose the projects they want to support. More than 160,000 teachers have secured more than $71 million worth of books, art supplies and technology resources.

Locally, more than 150 teachers have used the website to secure more than $119,000 in funding. Teacher Leanna Kromer from O’Callaghan Middle School, 1450 Radwick Drive, has funded eight classroom projects totaling more than $2,000 since January.

World Heritage Student Exchange
seeks host families

The World Heritage Student Exchange program is seeking host families in the Las Vegas Valley for high school boys and girls.

Couples, single parents and families with or without children are welcome to apply. Students can be hosted for a semester or for a school year.

Exchange students are available from Spain, Germany, China, Norway, Russia, France, Italy, Sweden and more.

Cultural Diversity Foundation
offers scholarships

The Cultural Diversity Foundation is offering college scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $2,500.

Students must be Clark County residents, maintain a 3.0 GPA and show financial need.

The foundation also plans to host online workshops with tips on how to search and locate scholarship awards online. The class is open to college-bound high school students and college students.
