Fire damage at North Las Vegas plant tops $2 million

A recycling plant blaze shot flames 50 feet into the air Thursday and sent up thick plumes of smoke that could be seen throughout the valley, according to the North Las Vegas Fire Department.

The accidental fire cause more than $2 million in damage.

Capt. Cedric Williams said firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 6:42 p.m. The fire, which was contained to the yard at Evergreen Recycling, a Republic Services company, began when bundles of plastic caught fire. Mechanical equipment and a street light were damaged.

The recycling plant is at 333 W. Gowan Road, near Commerce Street. Williams said while there were workers at the plant when the fire began, no employees or firefighters were hurt.

The Las Vegas Fire Department assisted in fighting the fire. The blaze was contained within 25 minutes, Williams said.

The fire was caused by improper disposal of smoking material.
