KATHLEEN DELANEY TO STEP IN
AS NEW SPECIALTY COURT JUDGE

Judge Kathleen Delaney is set to preside over the specialty courts in the Eighth Judicial District and take over judge Jackie Glass’ caseload, including drug, drunken driving and competency cases and a criminal calendar and fill-in for mental health court. Glass stepped down June 10 to become the host of the CBS syndicated television series “Swift Justice.”

Delaney took the District Court bench in Jan. 2009 as a business court judge. She has been a practicing attorney since 1990.

The Commission on Judicial Selection will recommend three candidates to Gov. Brian Sandoval for his selection for appointment to fill the vacant seat. Delaney’s current caseload will be reassigned. For more information about the Eighth Judicial District court, visit clarkcountycourts.us.

Photo contest to capture downtown

Professional and amateur photographers age 21 or older can enter Capture Downtown! — a photography competition sponsored by the city of Las Vegas, the Downtown Las Vegas Alliance, Symphony Park and the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Photos should depict life in downtown Las Vegas. Categories include Lifestyle: everyday life/work/play in downtown Las Vegas; Stars: interesting people who live/work downtown; and Icons: downtown landmarks, neon signs and historic buildings.

Winners will be announced in October. A People’s Choice Award also will be given. The entry photos will be hosted at lvrj.com Sept. 1-22 for voting.

Entry deadline is Aug. 15. All entries must be submitted digitally to downtownlasvegasalliance/capturedowntown.

LOCAL YMCA TO PARTICIPATE
IN NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is participating in the National School Lunch Program, a federally assisted meal program providing nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to students.

REGISTER FOR SUMMER CAMPS
AT LIED DISCOVERY CHILDREN’S MUSEUM

Lied Discovery Children’s Museum, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is offering weekly camp programs for children 6 to 12. Sessions are available from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. through Aug. 15.

KLEVEN CONTEMPORARY to show works of Krystal Ramirez in new EXHIBIT

The “Disintegration” exhibit, new works by artist Krystal Ramirez, is scheduled through July 29 at Kleven Contemporary, 520 E. Fremont St., inside the Emergency Arts building. The show focuses on a “simpler reality,” one without social media, phones and Internet dating. A closing reception is set for 6 to 9 p.m. July 29.

JURIED FINE ART WINNING PIECES shown
AT CHARLESTON HEIGHTS ARTS CENTER

The winners of the “Celebrating Life! 2011” juried fine art competition are scheduled to be on display at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. through June 30. Admission is free. Center hours are 12:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. The exhibit is scheduled to travel to City Hall Bridge Gallery to be displayed July 7 through Aug. 25.

This is the 11th year for the fine art competition, which is open to Clark County artists 50 or older. Sixty-nine artworks were selected for the juried exhibit out of the 207 works entered this year. Smokey bear exhibit on display
at lied discovery children’s museum

“Smokey Bear & Woodsey Owl: Home Sweet Home” is scheduled to be on display through Sept. 25 in the Cultural Gallery at the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

The exhibit was developed by the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service to spread the messages of wildfire prevention and wildlife conservation.

NEW EXHIBIT AT BRETT WESLEY GALLERY

Local artist Kevin Chupik is scheduled to unveil a series of paintings in his second solo show at the Brett Wesley Gallery, 1112 S. Chupik uses carefully painted dots and dashes to explore the formal elements of design and the resultant larger images and symbolism of the human female form and exotic plumed birds.
