Postal Service kicks off 19th Food Drive Across America

Donating food to the hungry will be made easy Saturday . Just fill a plastic bag with food items and set it by the mailbox.

Letter carriers for the U.S. Postal Service will pick up donations for the nation’s largest one-day food drive, Food Drive Across America, in its 19th year.

The annual drive has collected nearly a billion pounds of food in its history. In 2010, letter carriers and post offices collected a record 77.1 million pounds of food nationwide. Las Vegas ranked among the 10 most generous cities of its size, giving 401,000 pounds of food.

More than 10,000 communities nationwide are participating this year. Locally, food will be collected in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, Pahrump and Mesquite.

Donations also can be made at Albertsons stores through Saturday .

Plus, many post offices will have food-collection barrels in place for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The food will be distributed among a dozen food banks and dispersed to local families.
