Bicyclist, 85, dies after being struck by car

An 85-year-old bicyclist was killed after being struck by a car in the southwest valley Friday morning.

Las Vegas police said the man, who was not identified, was riding on Decatur Boulevard near Tropicana Avenue he crossed into the path of a Ford Escort driving north on Decatur at 9:47 a.m.

The cyclist went through the car’s windshield, injuring the driver, Crystal Hasty, 22, of Las Vegas. She was unable to stop the car and purposely struck a row of parked cars to avoid entering an intersection, police said.

The woman, transported to University Medical Center for precautionary reasons, will recover, police said.

The county coroner’s office will identify the bicyclist. The investigation remains open, but police do not suspect alcohol or speed were factors. It is unknown whether charges will be filed.
