Stalled traffic, no injuries in transformer explosion

A transformer exploded near CityCenter early Sunday morning, stalling traffic and causing power outages in the area, according to Clark County officials.

The explosion occurred about 12:25 a.m. on Frank Sinatra Drive, behind the Monte Carlo resort. Responding firefighters were met by flames as high as 90 feet. The explosion blew debris onto Interstate 15. North and south lanes on I-15 and the Tropicana onramp were shut down as a precaution, officials said.

The fire was allowed to burn for 30 minutes to alleviate an oil spill in the area. The fire was extinguished at 1:35 a.m. and lanes on I-15 were reopened.

The cause of the explosion is undetermined. No injuries were reported.
