BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIRS SET AT AREA SHOPPING MALLS

The Clark County School District has scheduled back-to-school fairs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at The Boulevard mall, 3528 S. Maryland Parkway, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road.

Parents can receive information about food services, instruction, transportation, police services and zoning from school district officials.

The Southern Nevada Health District will be on site to administer immunizations for students. Costs range from $16 to $25 for most shots, though some may require additional fees. Parents will need to bring children’s immunization records.

rEGISTER KIDS FOR BUS TRANSPORTATION ON SCHOOL DISTRICT WEBSITE

Parents can register their kids for school bus transportation on the Clark County School District’s website, ccsd.net, or by calling 799-8111 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Parents need their children’s student identification number and date of birth to register, and eligibility can be determined on the website by street address.

JAMBA JUICE ACCEPTING DONATIONS TO PROMOTE LITERACY IN SCHOOLS

All Southern Nevada Jamba Juice locations will participate in the Bucks For Books campaign to raise money for the Public Education Foundation’s Clark County READS program, which provides books to students.

Jamba Juice will accept donations through Aug. 28 from customers and employees.

NEW CHARTER SCHOOL OPENS TWO LOCATIONS IN VALLEY

Discovery Charter School is offering open enrollment at its two valley locations: 8941 Hillpointe Road in Summerlin and 3883 Mesa Vista Way in Whitney. The school serves kindergarten through eighth grade.

DESIGN SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE FOR ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS

Three V Enterprises is accepting applications for the Student AquaTekture Design Competition and Scholarship, open to students enrolled in a college, university or vocational school. The submissions deadline is Sept. 1.

Three V Enterprises hosts the annual Global AquaTekture Visionary Awards that recognizes individuals and companies that use water creatively as a main architectural feature.

The scholarship "will be awarded to the student who demonstrates a promising future in integrative design or architecture and has a genuine interest in architecture, interior design, engineering, landscape design, (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), product or (Computer-aided Design) relating to AquaTekture."

The winner will receive a monetary scholarship and other prizes, and the design will be showcased at the Global AquaTekture Visionary Awards. The monetary value of the scholarship was not available. For an application and guidelines, visit gavaawards.com.

SPREAD THE WORD NEVADA HOSTING ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA

Spread the Word Nevada is scheduled to host its 10th Anniversary Storybook Gala at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at The Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

The Storybook Gala, "One Enchanted Evening," is the foundation’s largest annual fundraising event. The event will feature silent and live auctions, prize drawings, entertainment and dinner.

Spread the Word Nevada is a nonprofit group that donates books to disadvantaged children to help them create home libraries. Since 2001, nearly 200,000 local students have received more than 1.7 million books. Individual seats are $250, and various sponsorship levels are available.

SCHOOL DISTRICT SEEKING SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS FOR STUDENTS

The Clark County School District is seeking local donors to help more students pay for college next year. Any businesses or individuals interested in providing scholarship funds for students are asked to call Kim Boyle of CCSD’s Curriculum and Professional Development office at 799-8441 or Kelly Grimm of the Public Education Foundation at 221-7421.

Local graduates received nearly $150 million in scholarship offers this year, not including the Millennium Scholarship fund.

ONLINE SCHOOL NEVADA VIRTUAL ACADEMY ENROLLING FOR FALL

Nevada Virtual Academy, an online public charter school, is enrolling students for the 2011-12 school year.

NVVA offers curriculum for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. English, math, science, history, music and art courses are at the elementary and middle school levels. The high school program offers more than 200 core, elective and Advanced Placement courses, including foreign language.

HUGHES CENTER ACCEPTING SCHOOL SUPPLY DONATIONS

Donations of school supplies will be accepted through Aug. 24 at the Hughes Center concierge desk in the lobby of the Wells Fargo tower at 3800 Howard Hughes Parkway, near Flamingo and Paradise roads. The supplies will be donated to needy students at Rowe Elementary School, 4338 S. Bruce St.

Suggested supplies include notebook paper, writing tablets, backpacks, pencils, pens, rulers, glue, calculators, dictionaries, art supplies and more.
