Hospitals in Las Vegas area recognized
Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and two St. Rose Dominican Hospital campuses ranked as the top hospitals in the Las Vegas area, according to an annual poll by the magazine U.S. News & World Report.
The magazine released its 22nd annual ranking of the top hospitals in the nation. It also ranked the hospitals within 52 metropolitan areas.
Sunrise and St. Rose Dominican didn’t make the best-in-the-nation list, but they were dubbed “high performers,” meaning they nearly performed at the level of nationally ranked hospitals, said Avery Comarow, editor of the magazine’s health rankings. That earned the facilities No. 1 spots regionally in certain specialties, something that only 140 of the nation’s near 5,000 hospitals could claim.
“They are fully capable of giving most patients first-rate care, even if they have serious conditions or need demanding procedures,” Comarow said. “Almost every major metro area has at least one of these hospitals.”
St. Rose Dominican’s San Martin campus ranked first in Southern Nevada for neurology and neurosurgery, while St. Rose Dominican’s Siena campus in Henderson received the same accolades for its gynecology department.
Sunrise placed first for nephrology, or treatment of kidney disorders, for the second year in a row.
The magazine created the metropolitan rankings last year, saying it wanted to help consumers find a good, all-around hospital in their community and health insurance network. Data such as death rates, procedure volume, and balance of nurses and patients largely determined rank. A survey of physicians, who were asked to name hospitals they considered the best in their specialties, also was factored in.
The top five hospitals in the country, according to the magazine, are Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore; Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston; the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio; and Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.
