Studio 54 competing for clubgoers with special events

The steady influx of new clubs over the past few years has made the nightlife industry as competitive as ever.
While that may be bad for clubs vying for the hottest DJs and most popular celebrities, it’s a good thing for clubgoers, says Anthony Olheiser, spokesman for Studio 54 and director of nightlife for MGM Grand.
“It gives (customers) lots of options, for sure,” Olheiser says.
In an effort to drive traffic, they keep drink prices a bit lower than the competition and offer discounts on admission.
And even though nightlife is experiencing its annual dip in customers, thanks to the popularity of pool parties and dayclubs, business is strong. Reservations are down, but walk-up business is up. Olheiser attributes that to people changing their minds at the last minute or guests being more impulsive in their nightlife decisions.
“I think crowds are definitely back,” Olheiser says. “We’re seeing steady growth numbers-wise. It’s working out well.”
The Friday night event, DJ Loczi’s Electric Dream, may be responsible for some of that growth. Since debuting New Year’s Eve, it’s been popular.
On Oct. 28, Loczi will kick off the holiday weekend with the “Electric Scream,” a themed take on his Friday night event. The club will be decorated to create a cool haunted-house effect, Olheiser says. Oct. 29 will be Hollyween with Holly Madison hosting the evening. On Halloween, Studio 54 will host the Beaux Arts Ball, with proceeds going to support Golden Rainbow, a nonprofit that helps people living with HIV and AIDS.
A series of events is planned for the rest of September, with Victor Ortiz hosting an after-fight party Sept. 17. Magic Johnson and friends will also be on hand that weekend, Olheiser says.
Studio 54 is open from 10 p.m. until 4 or 5 a.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Cover charge is $20 during the week; $30 for men and $20 for women on Fridays and Saturdays. Admission for local women is free.
