Las Vegas man held in neighbor’s beating death

Las Vegas police arrested a 28-year-old man Thursday in the beating death of a 60-year-old man last month.

Christian Armando Borrayo was charged with beating Shahen Der Avakian to death with a golf club after an argument in Der Avakian’s Las Vegas apartment on June 24, according a police report.

Borrayo told detectives he was angry at Der Avakian because the man had hit his friend, Ricardo Atrixco, with a bag of trash earlier that day.

All three men lived at the apartment complex at 4299 Sirius Ave., near Desert Inn Road and Valley View Boulevard.

Atrixco told detectives he had asked Der Avakian for a pack of cigarettes when the man accused him of stealing his lighter and hit him with the bag.

When Borrayo and Atrixco confronted Der Avakian in his apartment later that day, Der Avakian allegedly said, “You want some, too?” Borrayo told police.

Borrayo then grabbed a 3-iron golf club from the corner of the room and hit Der Avakian twice “in self-defense,” he told police.

When detectives told Borrayo that Der Avakian had been struck in the back at least six times, Borrayo said he “possibly could have hit the Iranian more than twice,” the report said.

Der Avakian’s body wasn’t found until two days later, and neither Borrayo or Atrixco ever reported the incident.

Borrayo was booked at the Clark County jail on one count of murder with a deadly weapon.

Atrixco cooperated with police and had not yet been arrested or charged.
