Daily Dime: Watch for this at Day 3 of NBA Summer League
The third day of the 2016 NBA Summer League will feature eight games in total — four in the Thomas & Mack Center and four in the adjacent Cox Pavilion.
Last year, the 2015 summer league saw a record 99,437 attendees, which was an average of 9,040 per session. Look for similar numbers this time around.
For the first time, ESPN will be televising games from Las Vegas.
GAME OF THE DAY
Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Toronto Raptors — Kris Dunn, the fifth overall pick this year’s draft, will be playing in his second summer league game, when the Timberwolves take on the Raptors at 3 p.m. in the Cox Pavilion. Dunn showed flashes of an early-2000s Dwyane Wade in his first game on Friday, and will look to keep improving in his second game. He will match up with second-year guys Norman Powell (UCLA) and Delon Wright (Utah) and rookie Fred VanVleet (Wichita State). The Raptors also have big man Jakob Poeltl, who was the ninth overall pick in this year’s draft.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
* How will Ben Simmons respond after his Philadelphia 76ers dropped their first summer league game Saturday in Las Vegas, 70-69, on a buzzer-beater by Los Angeles’ D’Angelo Russell? Simmons played 31 minutes and finished with eight points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and seven turnovers.
* Michael Beasley, who was the second overall pick in the 2008 draft out of Kansas State, is playing for the Houston Rockets despite having eight years of NBA experience. The Rockets face the Sacramento Kings at 3:30 p.m. in the Thomas & Mack Center.
* The Phoenix Suns’ roster is loaded with talent. Look for this team, if everyone continues playing, to compete for the summer league title. Dragan Bender, the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft, will team up with second-year guy Devin Booker (Kentucky) and Marquese Chriss (Washington) and Tyler Ulis (Kentucky).
