Teen slain in drive-by shooting identified

A teenager fatally shot earlier this month in the central valley was identified Monday by the Clark County coroner’s office as 17-year-old Gilbert R. Gonzales.

Gonzales died from a gunshot wound to his torso and neck, according to the coroner’s office. Gonzales, from Las Vegas, was pronounced dead at University Medical Center.

Las Vegas police said the shooting occurred July 5 about 3:30 a.m. near Las Vegas Boulevard, north of Sahara Avenue.

Police said Gonzales was walking to a market with three other people when a white Ford Focus drove by and did a U-turn. At least three shots were fired from the vehicle toward the group.

The Focus was thought to be an early 2000 model.

The shooting might have been gang-related.
