Student athletes face random drug testing and suspensions

YERINGTON — Student athletes in Lyon County will be subject to random drug testing under a policy approved by the school board.

Officials said the policy is meant to be preventative and adopts punishments set out under Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association rules.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that under the policy approved June 28, the district will select an independent drug testing vendor.

The vendor will be given a list of student athletes and randomly select up to 20 percent for drug testing at regular intervals.
