Kirk and Rhonda Clausen were honored Sept. 14 by the United Way of Southern Nevada at its Tocqueville Society annual dinner at Cili’s Restaurant at Bali Hai Golf Club .
The couple were honored for their generous giving and volunteer efforts over the years.
Rachel Wallace, a student at Bishop Gorman High School, and Aaron Sampson, a student at The Meadows School, have been named semifinalists in the 2012 National Achievement Scholarship Program offered by the National Merit Scholarship Corp .
More than 1,600 American high school seniors have been designated semifinalists in the 48th annual program. The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately financed academic competition that operates without government assistance.
John and Joti Sandhu, franchisees of five Navis Pack & Ship logistics shipping centers in Las Vegas and the San Francisco Bay Area, were recently honored as Franchisees of the Year in a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The Sandhus have owned and operated their businesses since 1988. The couple were recently recognized at the International Franchise Association’s public affairs conference.
Chef Maria Perry, co-owner of the Bootlegger Italian Bistro, was featured on the Cooking Channel’s Food(ography) program during the week of Sept. 27.
The producers and crew interviewed the 94-year-old Perry for the program. She is the executive chef at the restaurant.
Wayne Newton was presented the 2011 Champion of Freedom Award Oct. 1 during the Rocky Mountain USO Freedom Dinner in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Newton was recognized for his dedication to the armed forces and gave the keynote speech to express his gratitude for American men and women in uniform.
Rare armed forces memorabilia owned by Newton is set to be on display at Casa de Shenandoah when he opens the home to the public later this year.
Dr. Daniel L. Orr, DDS, PhD, JD, MD, of Las Vegas, has received the 2011 Daniel M. Laskin Award for being an outstanding predoctoral educator on Sept. 14 during the opening ceremony of the 93rd annual meeting: Scientific Sessions and Exhibition of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Philadelphia.
Orr is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Legal Medicine.
William C. Anton was honored by the National Hellenic Museum with its inaugural Cultural Icon Award on Sept. 22.
Anton is the chairman emeritus of the board of trustees of the Culinary Institute of America.
He founded Anton Airfood in 1989 and is the managing partner of Anton Venture Capital Fund LLC.
Terry Marshall of Las Vegas earned first prize in the Global eBook Award contest for illustrations in the novel, “Soda Springs: Love, Sex, and Civil Rights.”
The artwork, by syndicated editorial cartoonist Chuck Asay, earned the book first prize for best illustration in fiction.
Jet Tila of Las Vegas participated in a contest by Cream of Wheat to develop recipes featuring Cream of Wheat as a key ingredient.
Tila, employed by Wazuzu restaurant at Encore, created crispy Thai salmon with green apple slaw.

In addition to making a monetary donation in each chef’s name, the brand plans to donate one box of Cream of Wheat to a national hunger relief charity, up to 5,000 boxes total, for every recipe downloaded.
