TODAY AT SANTA ANITA
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
10 Malibu Love – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to win.
5 Silver Street – Tepid chalk in an open opener; class drop from $50K to $30K can only help the cause.
Long Shot – 4 Kvetch
Race 2 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
5 Our Boy Benjamin – After a slow start in last, was flying fast at the finish; bred to handle the greensward.
1 Big Bad Barry – Rail skimming trip can be an advantage here; has enough speed to protect his position.
Long Shot – 2 Mental Giant
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 2-year-olds
2 Endless Cruise – Looks like a sharp claim by John Sadler; don’t expect this one to run for a price for a while.
7 Hot Ride – Was flattered when Chips All In won next out; looks like a nice sprinter who can grind out purses.
Long Shot – 3 Warren’s Clyde
Race 4 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $21,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
10 Visual Intensity – Appears better suited for grass than dirt or synthetics; tactical speed to sit a good trip.
4 Absolutlypositivly – Been long in the tooth but runs fast enough to be in many turf trifectas; be grinding late.
Long Shot – 11 One Nation
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles, $250,000 Norfolk, 2-year-olds
5 Drill – Renewal of a great finish in the Del Mar Futurity last out; should improve as the races get longer.
4 Creative Cause – Was ridden with complete confidence in the Del Mar Futurity; big rider switch to Joel Rosario.
Long Shot – 6 Basmati
Race 6 – 1 1/16th miles, $250,000 Lady’s Secret, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Blind Luck – The champ remains the one they have to knock out; she has earned her frequent flyer mileage.
3 Ask the Moon – We’ll find out if she’s much improved or just exploded at Saratoga; eastern shippers have done well lately.
Long Shot – 7 Zazu
Race 7 – 1 1/8th miles, $250,000 Goodwood, 3-year-olds and up
2 Coil – A forgiving handicapper must draw a line thru the Travers debacle; 3-YO facing his elders tonight.
8 Game On Dude – Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry; sure looks like one of his two horses will win the Goodwood.
Long Shot – 7 Awesome Gem
Race 8 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $48,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
5 Mr. Make Believe – Well regarded colt is improving with each start; suspect will be highly overbet in this spot.
6 Romeo Royale – Big rider switch to P Val off a victory; has good tactical speed so expect an aggressive ride tonight.
Long Shot – 4 Renegade Storm
Race 9 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
6 Final Vindication – You’ll have a big edge over me with nearly all FTS here; like the bullet work and P Val riding.
4 Coach Sickie – Is bred to be quick and could surprise from Jeff Mullins barn; watch the tote board for clues.
Long Shot – 1 Blueskiesnrainbows
Race 10 – 1 1/4 miles (turf), $250,000 Yellow Ribbon, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 Cozi Rosie – Garrett Gomez had choices and opted to ride for John Sadler; this looks like the toughest race on the card.
3 Dubawi Heights – Did everything but win in the Beverly D last out; speedy sort may get a jump on the deep closers.
Long Shot – Harmonius
Race 11 – 6 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
11 Sweet Pleasure – Tiny edge in an open finale to the pick 6; if you’re live, you need to be spread in this race.
6 Nana Beach – Figures to get overlooked with 23 losses; key is this is such a slow field she may inherit the lead.
Long Shot – 4 Jenny’s Turn
Best Bet – 2 Endless Cruise (race 3)
Santa Anita Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$35.80; Long Shots, 9/2/$30.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
