Pink Floyd laser show set for Henderson Pavilion
October 17, 2011 - 11:19 pm
Using lights, special effects and video choreographed to the songs of Pink Floyd, Paramount’s LaserSpectacular is coming to Henderson.
“Pink Floyd is a following that attracts different crowds,” said Nicole Johnson, a spokeswoman with the city of Henderson’s cultural arts and tourism department. “The music resonates with people.”
The show is scheduled for 8 p.m. Sunday at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway. Tickets start at $10.
The show’s producer, Steve Monistere, said the idea to start a laser show was presented to him in 1986 while he was producing a jazz concert in Texas.
He had never heard of the idea before but decided to give it a shot. Paramount’s LaserSpectacular was born and celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2011.
When designing the show, Monistere said lights and special effects are intentionally designed to interpret the song they partner with.
“It tells a story,” Monistere said.
Monistere wants people to know this isn’t some show they just sit down and watch.
“This is not a sit-on-your-hands experience,” he said. “This is a concert.”
The show has toured the U.S., Canada and Europe.
“If you can name a major city (in the U.S.), we’ve been there,” Monistere said. “We haven’t gone to China yet. That is one market I’d like to break into.”
With new technical advances each year, Monistere said the show has become more efficient .
“All the equipment is getting smaller over time,” he said. “When touring, we used to have three trucks (to carry equipment). Now we are down to one.”
As technology advances, Monistere said the shows have improved in quality.
He said every couple of years, the team revamps the show to make sure fans can enjoy something new.
But the Pink Floyd theme remains.
One of Monistere’s favorites is “Wish You Were Here.”
“We take videos of rock stars who have passed away and play (the videos) with the song,” Monistere said. “Fans enjoy it.”
Other fan favorites include “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Money.”
Johnson expects a diverse turnout at the event ranging from an older crowd to teenagers.
“We had a Doors tribute band a few weeks ago,” Johnson said. “We had people in their 50s and 60s and teenagers. I think it will be the same.”
