Illinois becomes first state to capitalize on DOJ ruling Wire Act ruling

Illinois became the first state to begin selling individual lottery tickets over the Internet.

The moves follows December’s ruling by the U.S. Department of Justice, which said the Federal Wire Act of 1961 applies only to sports wagering.

Wagering began Sunday.

Visitors to illinoislottery.com are asked to register and enter credit card and Social Security numbers, date of birth, name and address.

Sophisticated software is expected to ensure that only Illinois residents, ages 18 and older, can participate. Purchases are limited to $100 a day. At first, only MegaMillion and Lotto games will be offered.

American Gaming Association Frank Fahrenkopf Jr., said at least 21 states and the District of Columbia are considering online lottery sales or other wagering such as poker.

Illinois and New York asked the Justice Department for the ruling on the Wire Act. Other states are expected to follow Illinois.
