Q I am 66 years old and still work out regularly, but I am getting weaker. Why is this happening?

A Weakness can describe a number of symptoms, including loss of muscle strength (most common interpretation) as well as malaise or fatigue. It can be further divided into (1) true weakness and (2) perceived weakness. True weakness is documented by simple muscle strength testing by a clinician and may be due to muscle injury, inflammation, medication and metabolic disorders. Exercising in hot weather is a common association. Depression and chronic fatigue syndrome may be associated with perceived weakness. Understanding the circumstances surrounding the weakness – context, duration, any other medical conditions, medications, and environmental factors – may assist in defining the causes.
