Styx doubles down by playing two classic albums in concert

Styx is taking the reigning trend of the concert industry and doubling down on it.

The classic rockers are playing not just one, but two of their big-selling albums start to finish this weekend at the Palms: “The Grand Illusion” and “Pieces of Eight.”

“Illusion” put the heartland rockers into the big leagues in 1977. The album is so synonymous with Styx that it’s hard to imagine any concert leaving out “Come Sail Away,” “Fooling Yourself” or the title track. Still, for those who haven’t heard “Castle Walls” in many years, this is your chance.

“Pieces of Eight” doesn’t have quite so many iconic songs, but does have the advantage of its two big hits – “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)” and “Renegade” – being voiced by the singer who is still in the band, Tommy Shaw. (The Dennis DeYoung leads have been covered by Lawrence Gowan since 1999.)

And the rare chance to hear “Lords of the Ring” live again can get you in the mood for “The Hobbit” movie next month.
