Haws, Davies excel as BYU tops Portland

PROVO, Utah — Tyler Haws scored 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds Saturday night to lead Brigham Young to an 86-72 win over Portland.

Haws was 13 of 19 from the field and has scored 20 or more points 18 times this season. Brandon Davies added 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting for the Cougars (19-8, 9-4 West Coast Conference).

Matt Carlino and Craig Cusick had 10 points and seven assists apiece for BYU, which shot 59.6 percent from the field in improving to 9-0 against Portland.

Thomas van der Mars scored 19 points and Tanner Riley 15 for the Pilots (9-18, 2-10), who shot 46.7 percent from the field and were outrebounded 31-28.

BYU never trailed, leading 46-25 at halftime and by as many as 24 points in the second half. Portland ended the game on an 8-0 run.

The Cougars retired the jerseys of BYU legends Mel Hutchins and Roland Minson during a halftime ceremony.
