Woman struck, killed by vehicle identified

The woman killed in an accident near Valley View Boulevard and Sahara Avenue on Sunday has been identified by the Clark County coroner’s office as 52-year-old Brenda Kay Smiley.

According to witness reports, Smiley and a second victim, 39-year-old Eduardo Planton-Sanchez, were struck by a 2006 Nissan Titan while walking on a sidewalk along Valley View Boulevard about 5 p.m.

Police said Jason Manuma, 33, was driving the Titan eastbound on Sahara when he made a sudden right turn and drove into oncoming traffic. He continued onto the sidewalk, where he hit Smiley and Planton-Sanchez.

The two victims were taken to University Medical Center, where Smiley was pronounced dead. Planton-Sanchez suffered nonlife-threatening injuries.

According to police, Manuma fled but was caught by officers about two miles from the accident. Manuma failed a field sobriety tests and was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing a death and leaving the scene of an accident.

It was the 22nd fatal traffic collision in Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction in 2013.
