Rebels fall short in getting at-large baseball selection

UNLV (37-20), as expected, didn’t receive an at-large bid Monday to an NCAA baseball regional.

The Rebels’ chances diminished greatly when they lost to San Diego State 6-2 on Saturday in the Mountain West tournament. Then the Aztecs beat favorite New Mexico that night and again Sunday to claim the league tournament title and automatic bid.

San Diego State (31-29) all but erased any chance UNLV had of making a regional by taking one of the few spots that might have been available.

The Aztecs will play in the regional in Los Angeles, and Mountain West regular-season champion New Mexico (37-20) will be in the regional in Fullerton, Calif.

Though the Rebels (37-20) fell short, they won more games in a season since going 37-24 in 2004. This was their best record since going in 47-17 in 2003.
