Wagner, Mathews inducted into Nevada Senate Hall of Fame

Bernice Mathews, left, and Sue Wagner were inducted Wednesday into the Nevada Senate Hall of Fame. Mathews became the first black woman to serve in the Senate when she was elected in 1994. Wagner served in the state Assembly and for 10 years in the Senate before becoming the first woman elected lieutenant governor.

CARSON CITY — Two pioneering women with long careers in the state Senate are being honored for their contributions to Nevada.

Sue Wagner and Bernice Mathews were inducted Wednesday into the Nevada Senate Hall of Fame.

Wagner began her legislative career in 1974 in the state Assembly. In 1980 she was elected to the Senate where she served for 10 years before becoming the first woman elected lieutenant governor.

In 1997 she was appointed to the Nevada Gaming Commission, a position she held until 2009.

Mathews became the first black woman to serve in the Senate when she was elected in 1994. She served 16 years in the upper chamber.

Both women were hailed for their public service and for being role models to young women.
