Clark County School District, teachers union reach tentative accord

The Clark County School District and its teachers union, the Clark County Education Association, have reached a tentative agreement on 2013-14 contract terms for 18,000 teachers.

It’s unknown whether teachers’ system of automatic pay raises for seniority and professional development, which the district froze last year in an arbitration victory, will be reinstated. Contract details remain confidential until the School Board and union members ratify the terms.

School Board President Carolyn Edwards said she’s “glad” to have a tentative agreement before the start of the school year to give teachers peace of mind as they return to class Monday. That wasn’t the case for the last two school years where the two parties deadlocked, forcing an arbitrator to decide contract terms for school years that were already drawing to a close.

Clark County Education Association President Vikki Courtney called the agreement a “continuation of the growing collaboration” between the two parties.
