Faculty Senate weighs in on replacing UNLV president

UNLV’s Faculty Senate wants an acting president to be appointed and a national presidential search to begin as soon as possible to replace President Neal Smatresk.

That was the basis of a resolution it approved during a Tuesday meeting. The resolution will be forwarded to the state’s Board of Regents during its meeting later this week in Las Vegas.

“I think it’s important that they (regents) know what our sentiments are,” said Faculty Senate Chairman Paul Werth.

Smatresk last month was named the sole finalist for the president’s position at the University of North Texas. If confirmed next week to fill the position by that system’s Board of Regents, Smatresk said Tuesday he plans on submitting his resignation from UNLV on Dec. 13. His last day at the university would be Feb. 2.
