Melody Sweets: One thing we have in common in showbiz? Laughter
Editor’s Note: While Robin Leach is on his annual family vacation in Italy, several of his showbiz pals have stepped forward to submit guest columns while he enjoys the treasures of Tuscany. We always look forward to what sexy Melody Sweets of the raucous ABSINTHE at Caesars Palace has to say, but this year the burlesque Green Fairy had a little difficulty getting started with her words of wisdom.

Well, here it is, 3 a.m. on a Monday, the beginning of my weekend. (Technically, it’s my Friday night as ABSINTHE runs Wednesdays through Sundays). My deadline for this column is tomorrow (or today, if you want to get technical. but, really, it’s not tomorrow until I wake up.)
Anyway, I’m completely at a loss as to what to write this time around, but someone very important to me told me to just start writing. “Get something on the page. It’s not going to write itself.”
Ah! Ok! Stop yelling at me. 😉
In the past, my stories for Robin have always been fairly easy to write. I like to have fun with them. They usually end up being silly, sexy, fun, no-pressure columns. But, this year it’s different.
It’s not that I don’t have a lot to say because if you know me purrrsonally, you would know that I’m an extremely opinionated person with no problem speaking my mind. But this time around is different. I’m not in a silly, fun, no-pressure mood (I’m still feeling pretty sexy, though. Meeeow!)
But in the search to find something lighthearted and fun to write about, I realized that I do have something that, without fail, not only makes me extremely happy, but, it also has made more than a gazillion people (and counting!) feel the same way.
Showbiz. 🙂
The moment I hit that stage, everything melts away. All the pressures of the outside world seem to disappear. It’s just me, my music and a packed house full of people who are probably all in the same state of shock and numbness that I am with all the crazy things going on around us.
Maybe you think I’m being a little melo(dy)dramatic, but it’s real. Think about it for a minute. At that same moment that I hit the stage, the audience is completely with me, completely in that moment. Carefree. Smiling. Laughing.
When I look out into the audience, I see people of all shapes, sizes, colors and genders. And not only is the audience enjoying their time together, seemingly not thinking about their differences, they also are enjoying an international cast of extremely talented artists who are enjoying their time with the audience.
People from all over the world come together to experience a cast full of people from all over the world. Want to know what we all have in common in that moment? Laughter. We’re all laughing together. We’re all enjoying that moment in time together. Every person in the audience, no matter what ethnicity, color or sexual orientation, is having a good time – together.
While the outside world seems out of control, somehow this crazy world we call showbiz seems more real, necessary and in control than ever before. We’re all looking for an escape. A place where we can just let go, be carefree and forget about the daily barrage of media scares, politics and religion.
Showbiz allows us to forget about our “real” worlds and makes us appreciate and celebrate life and people, all people. It gives us that feeling of freedom, of fun … the chance to just laugh our asses off until our stomachs hurt. To witness beauty, strength and raw talent … up close, in your face, raw talent with no TV screen or iPhone to interrupt the moment.
I think that when you visit our show, it’s more than just an entertainment experience. It’s a chance to enlarge your view of the world, at least in some small way. You learn about artistry of different cultures. You can expand your understanding of individuals of vast ethnicities and backgrounds. And, of course, you’ll have a great time doing it.
This wasn’t meant to be a commercial for ABSINTHE, BTW. I just realized that if everyone could keep that same state of mind that they had while sitting next to a complete stranger — tolerant, in peace and having fun — the world could be a much more pleasant and peaceful place.
Well, the sun is coming up. I think that’s my cue. This showgirl needs her beauty sleep.
