Allegiant Air to offer first class — but hold the cocktails

Allegiant Air will start offering first class.

No, the airline that has been all-coach throughout its existence has not suddenly decided to go after the business market that so many other airlines covet. In fact, a first class seat will not come with standard first class perks, such as free cocktails.

Allegiant, a unit of Allegiant Travel Co., will put six big seats on its six Boeing 757s that mainly fly between Honolulu and several western cities, including Las Vegas. Two will have footrests that are intended for pilots, to comply with new federal rules regarding how much rest they need. The other four, without footrests, along with the pilot seats when pilots don’t need them, will be sold to passengers for an extra fee, much like the Big Front Seats offered by Spirit Airlines.

Prices have not yet been announced.
