Passenger killed in first Las Vegas traffic fatality in 2014

A 31-year-old man died when the car he was riding in collided with a pole on Eastern Avenue south of Harris Avenue Sunday morning.

According to Las Vegas police, the driver of a 2002 Chevy Tahoe southbound on Eastern Avenue was speeding and failed to maintain the lane, crashing head-on with a wooden power pole about 1:30 a.m.

The passenger was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

The 25-year-old driver, Guadalupe Buenrostro, who was ejected from the vehicle, was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries.

This is the first traffic fatality under Las Vegas police jurisdiction in 2014.
