Today at Santa Anita Park: Feb. 2, 2014

TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK by Richard Eng

Post Time 11 a.m.

Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 4-year-olds and up

3 Second Proposal – Dead late closer may have found enough dead wood to pass in the lane; one bad race was 2 back on synthetics.

2 Mahogany Run – FTS from the Bill Spawr barn; in a race this slow, you must check out the FTS, especially tote board action.

Long Shot – 4 Take a Risk

Race 2 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

1 Amanda – The last two races are more like it for this filly; has shown more early speed and diligence to fight for the lead.

6 Lake Maracaibo – Won easily in last but not sure what was behind her; it was her first race for a price tag, and a win.

Long Shot – 3 Intoxicating Move

Race 3 – 1 mile, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

6 Visions of Candy – Has shown improvement in her last 2 starts; tactical speed to sit a good trip in a race full of slowpokes.

7 Kylee’s Star – Has finished in the money 2-of-3 starts since dropping down for a price tag; a contender for sure with these.

Long Shot – 5 Putahexonher

Race 4 – 6 furlongs, $200,000 Palos Verdes, 4-year-olds and up

4 Secret Circle – Winner of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint is credentials enough; has a sparkling record here in Arcadia.

2 Sahara Sky – Grade 1 winner has been away since winning the Met Mile at Belmont last May; key is how fit off the long layoff.

Long Shot – 3 Majestic Stride

Race 5 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

4 Moscato Girl – John Sadler doesn’t claim many, so this one showed something; is spotted nicely to win right off the bat.

6 Strollin Home – Very little is slowing down the Tom Proctor barn; been using Gary Stevens and bugboy Vandyke exclusively.

Long Shot – 11 New Nature

Race 6 – 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 8 feet), $40,000 Super Bowl Party Handicap, Starter handicap $25,000, 4-year-olds and up

7 Olympic Blue – Has won half his 10 turf starts including his lone Arcadia sod start; Rafael Bejarano continues to ride well.

9 Te Rapa – Mike Smith replaces Kayla Stra who rode this horse very well; may get overbet if punters read too much into it.

Long Shot – 2 Depreciable

Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up

3 Cat Burglar – Bob Baffert only seems to win every stakes in SoCal flattered when Appealing Tale won on Saturday’s card.

2 Footbridge – Got a test drive in return off a 8-month hiatus; expect a sharper, tighter colt who will finish with energy.

Long Shot – 4 Secretsatmidnight

Race 8 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds

8 Prospector Alley – John Sadler is running 2 horses off the claim today; he doesn’t reach in for many, so expect good things.

12 Alert Bay – Tepid chalk in a race fraught with danger; regardless, should get a square price on this NoCal invader.

Long Shot – 7 Unusually Green

Best Bet – 3 Cat Burglar (race 7)

Santa Anita Park Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/3/$13.40; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Park Totals – 410/122/$754.20; Long Shots, 203/23/$248.60; Best Bets, 25/11/$49.00

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #7 Masters Degree (5/2) in race 7 at Fair Grounds. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Ire ran third at Fair Grounds paying $2.60 to show. Stats – 24/13/$92.10; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
