AAU basketball tournaments take over Las Vegas this week
July 17, 2016 - 3:15 pm
Las Vegas residents have gathered in droves the past two weeks to watch future NBA stars compete in the Summer League at the Thomas &Mack Center.
This week, beginning Wednesday, there will be plenty more basketball around the Valley when top AAU travel teams visit Las Vegas to compete in gyms around Southern Nevada.
A couple of the tournaments to look for:
■ The Las Vegas Fab 48 will consist of 48 teams, but only 32 teams will advance to the championship rounds. The championship games will be held at Bishop Gorman High School. A daily pass costs $15, and a tournament pass is $50.
■ The adidas Summer Championships will have over 100 teams from around the country vying for the Summer Championships trophy on July 24. The 17-Under championship game, which will be played at Cashman Center, airs at 3 p.m. on ESPNU. Pricing has not been announced.
■ The Las Vegas Classic has been running for the past 20 years. In 2015, nearly 950 teams, including most of the top teams in the country, came to Las Vegas to end their travel seasons. The Georgia Stars beat Mac Irvin Fire (Chicago) — the team that eliminated the Las Vegas Prospects — in the Platinum Elite championship last year. This year, a daily pass will be offered for $15, and a tournament pass will cost $50.
