Rangers draft Arbor View pitcher Gonzalez in 13th round

Right-handed pitcher Gabe Gonzalez, an Arbor View High School graduate who signed with UNLV, was taken in the 13th round of the major league draft Saturday, going as the 396th overall pick to the Texas Rangers.

He was the highest local selection on the final day of the 40-round draft.

UNLV junior third baseman T.J. White, who went to Bishop Gorman, was chosen in the 18th round (530th overall) by the Minnesota Twins.

Texas Lutheran junior right-hander Kyle Simmons, a Silverado product, went in the 24th round (724th overall) to the Washington Nationals.

Also selected: Scott Tomassetti, a catcher from College of Southern Nevada and Sierra Vista, in the 34th round (No. 1,012 overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies; Jordan Hand, a catcher from Shadow Ridge, in the 34th round (No. 1,015) by the New York Mets; Tanner Chauncey, a junior shortstop from Brigham Young and Las Vegas High, in the 35th round (No. 1,059) by the Los Angeles Dodgers; Patrick Armstong, a senior first baseman from UNLV, in the 39th round (No. 1,169) by the Los Angeles Angels; and Tyler Brown, a second baseman from CSN and Coronado, in the 40th round (No. 1,211) by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
