UNLV golfer Dana Finkelstein shines in NCAA regional

UNLV junior Dana Finkelstein shot 2-under par Friday to move into second place at the NCAA Central Regional in Stillwater, Okla.

Combined with her even-par in the opening round, Finkelstein sits at 142, four strokes behind leader Wad Phaechimplee of Kent State. Play finishes Saturday at the Karsten Creek Golf Course.

Finkelstein’s teammates struggled again Friday, and UNLV slipped to 17th place in the regional at 38-over par. Freshman Avery French is 12-over at 156 (78-78), freshman Vivian Chen is 15-over at 159 (82-7), and junior Mayko Chwen Wang (79-82) and senior Demi Mak (78-83) are 17-over at 161.

UCLA leads California by a stroke in the team competition.

Finkelstein could move on to the NCAA women’s championship May 20-23 in Tulsa, Okla., as the top eight teams and top two individuals from each of the three regionals advance.
