51s rally in ninth for 8-7 victory over Sounds

Cory Vaughn’s single to left-center field scored Travis d’Arnaud with the winning run as the 51s defeated the Nashville Sounds 8-7 Tuesday night at Cashman Field.

Trailing 7-6, Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off the bottom of the ninth with an infield single, was sacrificed to second by Daniel Muno and scored on Cesar Puello’s double to left. Vaughn hit a 2-2 fastball from Nashville reliever Donovan Hand (1-3) into left to score d’Arnaud.

The Sounds scored three runs in the eighth inning to tie the score 6-6, then took a 7-6 lead in the ninth on Hunter Morris’ home run to right against Buddy Carlyle (2-1).

Las Vegas roughed up Nashville starter Michael Blazek, an Arbor View High School graduate, who lasted only 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits. He gave up a solo homer to Muno and a three-run shot to Brandon Allen, giving the 51s a 4-0 lead after one inning.

The four-game series continues at 7:05 p.m. today.
