Taste of the Town: If you’ve got the dough, they’ve got your malasadas

Whatever form they take — doughnuts, beignets, zeppole, churros or fritters — we sure love our fried dough, and that would include malasadas, being sought by Tom Sullivan. And as usual, his fellow Taste of the Town readers have suggestions. Tom Walsh emailed that they’re available at Island Sushi &Grill at 9400 S. Eastern Ave., near Serene Avenue. And Karen Muir recommended L&L Hawaiian Barbecue at 1900 N. Buffalo Drive near Lake Mead Boulevard. There are at least eight other locations in the valley. “They aren’t Leonard’s, but, hey — they aren’t five hours away on Oahu, either,” Muir added. …

For Bea Shepard, Ruth Horschmann emailed that Lipton’s Cup a Soup, cream of chicken variety, is available at Winco at 80 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson; there’s another Winco at 6101 N. Decatur Blvd. And Linda Butterfield wrote that it can be ordered by calling (800) 372-0240. …

More on ham salad: Darlene Nix emailed that HoneyBaked Ham stores still sell “a good one” made in-store several times a week, with samples often available. And David Sheppard, general manager of the HoneyBaked store at 1112 S. Rainbow Blvd., emailed to tell me the same, adding that it’s available in both pound and portion sizes. There also are stores at 1533 W. Sunset Road in Henderson and 6331 Centennial Center Blvd. …

NEWS FOR FOODIES

The fall version of the twice-annual Las Vegas Restaurant Week is coming up, returning Aug. 22-28. It’s a benefit for Three Square food bank for which local restaurants have created prix-fixe menus that will be priced in a range from $20.14 to $50.14, with a flat donation of $4, $5 or $6 going to help end hunger in Southern Nevada. Since it started in 2007, Restaurant Week has raised more than $800,000 for Three Square. For a list of participating restaurants, their menus, prices and amount that will be donated, go to www.HelpOutDineOutLV.org.

The kickoff event for Restaurant Week will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 at Caesars Palace’s Mesa Grill, which sold the most designated prix-fixe menus during the last five Restaurant Weeks. Proceeds of the event, which will include a toast to the restaurant’s 10th anniversary, also will be donated to Three Square. It’s $75; for tickets call 702-731-7778.
