Free legal aid offered to Moapa flood victims
A new program is offering free legal services to the victims of recent flooding in the Moapa Valley.
Attorneys from Nevada’s Disaster Legal Services Program provide free, temporary legal assistance to those with substantial flood damage who cannot afford a lawyer.
The program offers a variety of assistance, including securing government benefits available to disaster victims; filing life, medical and property insurance claims; entering into home repair contracts; replacing lost legal documents; pursuing consumer protection matters; and counseling on landlord-tenant or mortgage and foreclosure problems.
Program officials will hold an information meeting from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the Moapa Valley Community Center in Overton.
Those who cannot attend are encouraged to contact Nevada Legal Services at 1-866-432-0404 or Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada at 1-702-386-1070 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to request disaster-related legal assistance.
On Sept. 8, a 100-year storm event swamped and damaged dozens of homes and washed out roads from the Moapa Paiute reservation to the edge of Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The flood also destroyed a section of Interstate 15, closing the main route through northeastern Clark County for several days.
The Disaster Legal Services Program was formed by Nevada Legal Services, the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, the State Bar of Nevada and the state bar’s Young Lawyers Section.
