TODAY AT SANTA ANITA by Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Claiming $10,000, 3-year-olds and up
7 Newfound Gold – Claimed two back by Peter Miller; ran OK in last, now is dropped into a lesser condition race.
4 Xuang Feng – Has had good success racing in Arcadia; third start off the claim by Adam Kitchingman.
Long Shot – 2 Zip Cat
Race 2 – 7 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Surfer Moon – The last two MSW races are awful since claimed by Melody Conlon; this is the level he belongs at, logical danger.
5 Armensky – At the bottom level, the less races the better; ran OK in career debut, suspect he has some room to improve.
Long Shot – 2 Broadcaster
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, $75,000 Anoakia, Fillies, 2-year-olds
6 Light the City – Interesting to see a Street Sense with so much early speed; plus she is bred to go long so she’ll keep improving.
5 Seduire – Speedball got dueled into defeat last time; this is an easier field so she might feel like the boss in here.
Long Shot – 3 Xoxo
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 It Is Living Water – Improved first off the claim by Peter Miller; facing winners for the first time, has good turf experience.
1 Kings Adventure – Exploded with a career best race in last; tries turf for the first time, but has two good synthetic efforts.
Long Shot – 8 Island Freedom
Race 5 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies, 3-year-olds
2 When I’m Calling U – Ran OK first off the claim by Bob Hess; slides down in class, Drayden Van Dyke replaces sidelined Kent Desormeaux.
6 Eddies Curl – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low class; this after a gutsy win last time out.
Long Shot – 3 Glorious Rebecca
Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 See Through – Has run well twice down the hill; seems like a matter of time before she gets her rally time out under Joe Talamo.
2 Temeeku – Key vote is Rafael Bejarano taking the call; like the cut back in distance for going down the hill.
Long Shot – 8 Williams Bay
Race 7 – 7 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
7 One Gun – Simon Callaghan is one underrated SoCal trainer; he adds blinkers on and this filly should show improvement.
3 So You Say – This is not among Bob Baffert’s best 2-YOs; key is she has not been put up for a price tag yet, so there is still hope.
Long Shot – 5 Miss Centerfold
Race 8 – 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
1 Husband’s Folly – Dead late closer figures to get a rail skimming ride; should find a seam to rally turning for home.
3 Ice Cream Truck – Both turf races came at Santa Anita with good results; gets class relief from the Pacific Classic for this.
Long Shot – 6 Christopher Street
Race 9 – 7 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
8 Militant – Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this career low rung; key is Rafael Bejarano sticks for the finale.
4 The Twelfth Man – Trainer change to Peter Miller despite a solid career debut; rider switch too to Elvis Trujillo.
Long Shot – 3 Concert Man
Best Bet – 6 Light the City (race 3)
Santa Anita Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 19/5/$42.20; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals – 178/44/$265.60; Long Shots, 87/11/$154.40; Best Bets, 10/5/$19.00
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #1 Franks Officer Gal (4/1) in race 3 at Keeneland. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total.
