Substitute teacher shortage critical in Clark County
Clark County schools often struggle to hire math, science, English and special education teachers, but the School Board declared a new critical labor shortage on Thursday — substitute teachers.
Under state law for critical labor shortages, the Clark County School District must show board members that every effort was made to fill these jobs before using retired teachers as a solution, as it would like to do for the next two years. That means these substitutes would be paid a salary on top of their pension payments.
While the district’s pool of substitutes has never been larger at 4,300 people, officials are seeking the ability to hire teachers within 90 days of their retirements, a period in which they’re supposed to be ineligible for work.
This comes at the same time that the district has a shortage of more than 600 licensed teachers, which requires substitutes to fill these positions indefinitely.
