Man with rifle shot by police near Reno-area highway exit

RENO — A man with a rifle who was shot and killed by police called 911 and acted erratically near businesses off a highway exit north of Reno, according to police.

Police Lt. William Rulla told the Reno Gazette-Journal it took about an hour to find the man after his call about 8:15 p.m. Thursday. The man said he had a gun near U.S. Highway 395 and Lemmon Drive.

Rulla said the nearby Amazon warehouse was locked down and SWAT officers and a police helicopter went to the scene. A sheriff’s deputy found the man about 9:15 p.m.

The man refused to surrender before he was shot, Rulla said. He was pronounced dead at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Because a Reno officer was involved, Sparks police are leading the investigation.
