Man killed when off-duty Las Vegas police officer, his wife, shoot him in Boulder City

Updated January 24, 2025 - 6:19 pm

A man was killed when an off-duty Las Vegas police officer and his wife shot him in their yard after they witnessed him attacking a woman in Boulder City on Friday, according to police.

After the officer stopped the attack, the man kept advancing toward the officer and his wife even after the officer told him to stop, prompting them to shoot him, a Metropolitan Police Department captain said at the scene Friday.

During a news briefing, Capt. Kurt McKenzie provided preliminary information about the shooting, which occurred on the 700 block of 6th Street in Boulder City just after 9:40 a.m.

McKenzie said that the Boulder City Police Department had called Metro for assistance. Dozens of law enforcement officers responded.

The Metro officer was inside his home with his wife when they heard a “commotion” coming from their neighbor’s backyard, McKenzie said. When the officer went outside, he found a man punching and strangling a woman that he was on top of, so the officer told his wife to call 911, police said.

The off-duty officer intervened, separating the man and the woman, according to police. He then brought the woman to his front yard to stay with his wife. After, the man “half followed” them, a Metro news release said.

“The officer gave numerous commands to the male to stop: ‘Do not come any closer, or we will shoot,’” McKenzie said. “At this time, the male continued to advance on them, causing the off-duty officer and his wife to shoot the subject, striking him.”

Medical arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene. The Clark County Coroner’s office will release his identity at a later date.

According to an email from Metro, the officer who fired was not injured.

When a reporter asked if the dispute between the man and woman was domestic, McKenzie said he was unsure.

“Well, this is extremely preliminary. I cannot say for certain right now,” McKenzie said. “It appears to be, but I am not certain at this time.”

McKenzie said that Metro would be investigating the event as an officer-involved shooting, given that the officer is employed with the department.

Friday’s shooting was the first officer-involved shooting of 2025, Metro said, adding that, per policy, the officer’s identity would be released after 48 hours.

“The incident does not involve any of our Boulder City police officers, and there is no danger to the public,” the Boulder City Police Department said on its Facebook page.
