Motorcyclist killed in crash near Red Rock Canyon identified

A motorcyclist from North Las Vegas died Thursday in a crash on the Red Rock Nevada Scenic Byway, also known as state Route 159, near Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
The crash occurred about 2:29 p.m. near Fossil Ridge Road, just past the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop entrance.
Shawn Raymond Pierson, 51, died when his motorcycle was traveling too fast for conditions and drove left of center into the eastbound travel lane as traffic was approaching, according to Nevada Highway Patrol investigators.
The preliminary investigation indicated that a black 2018 Harley-Davidson traveling westbound on Route 159 approaching mile marker 9.
“The rider of the motorcycle was traveling too fast for conditions while negotiating a curve and drove left of center into the eastbound travel lane as traffic was approaching,” according to a Monday news release.
The motorcycle struck a broken paddle marker base and overturned. The rider was then ejected.
