Shooting involving police officer investigated in east Las Vegas Valley

Updated December 5, 2024 - 7:38 pm

Police are investigating after officers shot a man who was holding a baton Thursday morning in the east Las Vegas Valley.

Authorities received a call at approximately 2:20 a.m. about a man with a bat swinging at pedestrians and vehicles in the 1500 block of Cobb Lane, near East Owens and North Eastern avenues, Capt. Kurt McKenzie said at a briefing.

Officers found a man in a blanket with a baton in the 1500 block of North Eastern Avenue, he said. They commanded him to drop the baton, but he used it to break into a vacant business, then attempted to break into another business, according to McKenzie.

Police used less-than-lethal force, McKenzie said, but the man charged and two officers shot him.

He then pulled a knife and tried to stand up, McKenzie said. Police again used less-than-lethal force, then he dropped the knife, according to Metro.

Police said the man was taken to University Medical Center, where he was in critical condition.
