Man who shot at Las Vegas officers arrested after 2 days on run

Updated December 1, 2024 - 2:36 pm

Police have arrested a man who allegedly shot at officers while running from them in the central Las Vegas Valley on Friday night and was at large for two days.

Jaime Mendoza, 54, who was considered armed and dangerous, shot at officers after a vehicle pursuit, according to a news release from the Metropolitan Police Department. Metro also said that Mendoza may have suffered injuries from the chase.

The shooting happened near the 1800 block of North Las Vegas Boulevard, a few miles north of downtown. Around 10:30 p.m., officers said they had located the Mendoza’s vehicle, which was believed to have been involved in a violent felony crime near Christy Lane and East Bonanza Road.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it sped away, causing police to lose sight of it. When police found the car again, half a mile away, it had been wrecked, and Mendoza had run from it, according to the news release.

Then, while running, Mendoza shot at officers, police said. One officer returned the fire and took cover, losing Mendoza again.

No officers were hurt in the shooting, police said.

Police said Mendoza was arrested on Sunday and is currently in custody and is facing several felony charges.
