Bill Murray put on a show for the fans who followed him and pro golfer D.A. Points during their round at the John Deere Classic Pro-Am on Wednesday in Silvis, Illinois.
Wearing a floppy hat and a blue and gold paisley shirt that was perpetually untucked, the comedy icon began bantering with the masses before he took his first swing.
Murray asked if any fans saw his beloved Cubs sweep St. Louis in Tuesday’s doubleheader. One woman behind the ropes said she was a Cardinals fan.
“Satan’s messengers on Earth,” Murray said of the Cards.
“And then it turns out your team is cheaters, too,’’ he added.
According to the Quad-City Times, Murray signed autographs and posed for photos with fans almost continuously as he moved from hole to hole.
When a boy with a Cardinals hat asked for an autograph, Murray signed, then said, “Are you a Cardinals fan? Get out of here. Rotten kid.”
As he walked up the second fairway, Laura Bollaert posed for another selfie with the actor.
“How old are you?” the twice-divorced Murray asked with a gleam in his eye.
“Twenty-seven,” Bollaert said.
“Perfect,” Murray said. “Are you seeing anybody?”
On the way to the steep third hole, Murray was given a ride in a cart, and he invited a startled Charmaine Moscoso to ride on his lap as he did so.
“I just asked if I could get a picture with him,” Moscoso said. “He said to hop on his lap, and I said ‘Well, OK.’ I can’t believe I rode on Bill Murray’s lap.’”
That’s what she said.
Murray saved some of his best antics for the 18th hole, where a large crowd gathered and a small John Deere tractor was parked on an island in a pond alongside the green. As amateur John Lagemann was preparing to putt, Murray interrupted in a loud voice: “Just a second, John. Which one of you knuckleheads drove his lawn mower out there?”
When he missed a putt of his own on 18, he threw his putter into a sand trap and kicked his bag twice. When he finally did hole out from about eight feet, he pointed to the hole in mock triumph.
It looks like a mirac… It’s in the hole!
