In November 1987 bulldozers began work on what was unofficially called the new Golden Nugget. The property had a long history dating from the Red Rooster Night Club’s opening in 1931 to the Castaways closure in July 1987. The new resort that would rise on the property became the Mirage. Steve Wynn’s new hotel would redefine the skyline of the Strip, bringing in the age of megaresorts with an unprecedented 3,044 hotel rooms. (Gary Thompson/Las Vegas Review Journal)
